What are the new domains?

There are currently proposals to create seven new generic top-level domains (similar to .com) where anyone can register any name they want (subject to normal trademark law etc).

The seven proposed new domains are:

  • .info
  • .web
  • .shop
  • .firm
  • .rec
  • .arts
  • .nom

Why is this happening?

There has been ongoing discussion for over two years now concerning the creation of the new domains. The main reason people give for wanting new domains is that it is difficult to get your company name as a .com now there are so many currently registered.

When will these domains be available?

The expected date for the start of registrations in the new domains is Jan 15th 1998. NetNames can accept an advance order now to be submitted as soon as applications are allowed giving you the best possible chance of getting the name you want.

Just call us on FREEPHONE 0800 269049 (UK only) or +44 20 7291 3900 and we will fax you an application form straight away.

Should we register in one or all of these new domains?

NetNames recommends that corporate clients looking to protect their name register in all seven new domains to ensure the best possible protection of their name.

How can we get involved with the process to create new names?

It is easy to get involved in the ongoing discussion process and to be part of the groups deciding policy for the new domains. The best way is to go to the gTLD-MOU web site and find out how to become a signatory organisation to the Generic Top-Level Domains Memorandum of Understanding (gTLD-MOU).
