A new organisation called Dot Kiwi Ltd has applied for the domain suffix .kiwi as part of the new gTLD application window.

Dot Kiwi was formed by a group of New Zealand expats including Peter Dengate-Thrush, the former President of ICANN. Its CEO, Tim Johnson, said that he “was keen to provide a way for New Zealanders around the world to connect and claim their Kiwiness online”.

The organisation has been set up so that when .kiwi domains are available for sale in 2013 (providing Dot Kiwi’s application is successful of course), a percentage of the revenue and profit before tax will be used to form a trust fund to support Christchurch following a series of recent earthquakes in the city. Tim Johnson said:

"I could... see a great opportunity to provide on-going financial support for the re-building of Christchurch - one of New Zealand's most beautiful cities and my hometown."
